If you're stuck trying to figure out if you're a Deep Autumn or a Deep Winter, you're not alone. Both share a love of deep, rich colours that would swallow up lighter seasons, but the difference is in your undertone. Deep Autumn is warm and golden, while Deep Winter is cool and icy.
Why the two get mixed up
It's easy to see why they get confused. Both seasons have a lot of impact, and neither handles those airy, pastel shades that look great on a Light Spring or Summer. Because you have natural depth, you can carry strong, heavy colours well. If you've spent time on quizzes and been told you have high contrast or dark features, you're probably landing right at this intersection.

A Deep Winter (see our Deep Winter guide) looks sharp and refreshed in colours that are clear, cool and crisp. Stop looking for what is 'dark' and start looking for what is 'warm' versus 'cool'.
Testing with jewellery and fabric
Your jewellery is a good place to start. If you're a Deep Autumn, you'll likely find yellow gold, brass or copper brings a healthy warmth to your skin. If you're a Deep Winter, silver, white gold and platinum will look more at home, while yellow gold might clash or look a bit heavy. If you aren't sure where you sit with gold or silver jewellery, hold them up to your face in natural daylight without any makeup on.
You can also try draping. Take an earthy, warm terracotta or olive green and compare it to a cool, royal blue or emerald. If the terracotta makes your skin look even and healthy, you're leaning into the autumn spectrum. If the royal blue makes your eyes pop and your skin look bright, you're likely in the winter camp.
Handling your neutrals
This is usually where things get frustrating. Neutrals are the foundation of your wardrobe, but the wrong temperature makes you look tired. As a Deep Autumn, look for warm, dark neutrals like chocolate brown, dark olive or creamy stone. Pure black can be a tricky one worn close to the face, though a soft, warm charcoal often works better.
If you're a Deep Winter, you're one of the lucky ones who can wear pure, carbon black right up to the face and have it look sharp rather than draining. You also look great in ink navy and icy grey. While choosing the best neutrals is personal, sticking to these temperature-aligned foundations makes putting an outfit together much easier.
What if you feel like you're both?
It's common to feel caught in the middle. This is why borrowing from other seasons is so helpful. Since both share a 'deep' dimension, you can often borrow from the darkest, most neutral colours of the other palette. If you're a Deep Autumn, you might find an ink navy dress works well if you add gold jewellery to bring some warmth back to your face.
If you're still stuck, look at your eyes and hair. Deep Autumns often have a golden or amber quality in their irises, even if they're brown. Deep Winters often have eyes that look like dark, cool pools of black or icy blue with very clear, bright whites. Can I shift from Deep Autumn to Deep Winter?
Your underlying colouring stays broadly consistent, so your natural season doesn't change. That said, going grey, getting a tan or dyeing your hair can shift which parts of your palette feel most alive on you, which is why it can sometimes feel as though something has changed. What has shifted is the context around your skin, not the undertone beneath it.
