The Best Neutrals for Your Colour Season

What makes something a neutral?

In colour theory, a neutral is a shade with low enough saturation that it sits quietly next to almost any other colour without fighting for attention. Practically speaking, they are the base of your outfit: the trousers, blazers, coats and classic tops you reach for because they're easy to mix and match.

The real trick is picking neutrals that share the same temperature and depth as the rest of your palette. If you're someone who suits warm tones but you're wearing cool-toned neutrals, the foundation of your outfit will feel slightly 'off'. Nothing will look quite right, and it can be hard to put your finger on why.

Spring neutrals - warm, light, and clear

Springs have warm, clear colouring, so your neutrals need to match that energy. True black and cool grey can look a bit harsh or washed out against your skin and hair.

Light Spring: Go for warm ivory, soft camel, warm stone and light golden tan. These act as your white, grey and black, giving you a base without any coolness. Peach-toned beige is also a great one that other seasons struggle to pull off.

True Spring: Rich camel, warm tan and clear golden brown are your workhorses. Olive green works well as a neutral here too. Navy is okay at a distance, but a warm brown-navy usually looks better than a pure blue-navy.

Bright Spring: You’ve got a bit more room to move because of your higher contrast. Warm ivory and light tan are your softest bets. You can get away with some black if you balance it with a bright, warm colour elsewhere, but chocolate brown and golden camel are much more reliable.

Summer neutrals - cool, soft, and blended

Summers are all about cool, soft colouring. Pure black is almost always too heavy for you; it creates way too much contrast against your blended features. Luckily, your proper neutrals are some of the most elegant colours out there.

Light Summer: Choose soft white (look for pink or blue undertones rather than cream), powder grey and pale blue-grey for your lightest pieces. For darker ones, try dusty rose-taupe or lavender-grey. Steer clear of warm beige, as it’ll just muddy your complexion.

True Summer: Charcoal with a blue or purple undertone (not a warm grey), soft grey-navy and dusty mauve work best as your darks. Navy is essentially your black; a cool, slightly faded navy does for you what black does for a Winter. Rose-brown and dusty taupe are great mid-tones.

Soft Summer: Because you’re muted, you’ve actually got the biggest range of neutrals of any Summer. Think of greyed-out tones like soft sage, dusty blue, taupe, mushroom and greyed-lavender. Avoid anything bright or crisp, your neutrals should always look a bit dusty.

Autumn neutrals - warm, deep, and earthy

Autumns have warm, muted colouring, and their neutrals are the richest of the bunch. If you really lean into your palette, you’ll find you don't actually need black at all, as your natural neutrals are far more versatile.

Soft Autumn: Warm mushroom, camel, soft warm taupe and stone are your go-to foundations. They’re earthy, quiet and go with everything else in your palette. Stick to warm ivory instead of cool white and leave the black and cool grey alone.

True Autumn: Deep chocolate brown is your powerhouse. It does exactly what black promises, it grounds your outfit and works with everything, but with the warmth you need. Forest green and warm olive work as neutrals, too. Terracotta-brown is another brilliant one that other seasons can't really pull off.

Dark Autumn: You can handle near-black tones, just make sure they’re warm. Dark chocolate, very deep olive and dark warm brown are your deepest options. A warm, very dark brown-black is your version of the black that cool seasons wear.

Winter neutrals - cool, deep, and clear

Winters are the only season where black is a true neutral, it’s cool, high-contrast and clear. That said, it’s not your only option, and some of you might find other colours work just as well as anchors.

Bright Winter: Because of your high contrast, pure black and pure white are your best neutrals, they’re the most dramatic pairing you can wear. Bright, cool charcoal works too. Avoid anything warm like camel or tan, as they’ll just pull against your natural colouring.

True Winter: Black, charcoal and cool white are your classics. Deep navy works as a neutral for you, and icy pale grey is a great light option. Your neutrals should be crisp and cool; avoid anything that looks warm or murky.

Deep Winter: You can take the deepest neutrals of anyone. Midnight navy, deep charcoal and black are all yours. You have a bit more room for depth than brightness, so very dark plum and deep forest green work well as neutrals in your wardrobe.

The one neutral everyone gets wrong

Everyone wears white, but it’s not one-size-fits-all. Some whites are warm (cream, ivory, off-white with a yellow cast), and some are cool (pure white, icy white with a blue or pink cast).

Warm seasons, Springs and Autumns, look better in cream and ivory. Cool white can make your skin look a bit sallow or grey. Cool seasons, Summers and Winters, look much better in pure or icy white. Cream and ivory can just make your complexion look a bit dull.

How to build your neutral wardrobe

Once you know your season's best neutrals, the approach is simple: buy your basics in those colours only. Try to resist the pull of the default black, grey or white unless they're actually on your seasonal list.

A wardrobe built on your specific neutrals will pretty much combine itself. You'll grab a pair of trousers and find they go with almost every top you own because they all share the same temperature. Getting dressed stops being a puzzle.
