What to Wear Instead of Black
Black is not a neutral. Here is what actually works - by season.
Black gets a reputation as the universal neutral. It's seen as the most reliable, easy colour to wear, but it's not actually neutral at all. Black is a very strong, cool, high-contrast colour. For some, it works brilliantly. For others, it fights with their skin tone. Learning which group you fall into is one of the most useful things colour analysis can teach you.
Why black does not work for everyone
Black is cool, deep and high-contrast. These traits look great if you have the same characteristics, cool skin, dark hair or eyes, and high natural contrast. For True Winter and Dark Winter types, black acts as a true neutral. It feels just as easy and right as navy does for other people. For everyone else, black adds a level of contrast that their face struggles to match. The outfit ends up becoming the main event rather than you. You look like you're wearing the clothes, rather than the clothes helping you look your best (and yes, it is a subtle but real difference).
The seasons that wear black well
If you're a True Winter, Bright Winter or Dark Winter, you're likely already wearing black. Your colouring has the coolness and depth to handle it without it being too much. Wear it as much as you like. Bright Springs can also manage black in small amounts, especially as a contrast piece rather than a full outfit, because your natural brightness gives you a bit more room to play with than other warm seasons.
What to wear instead: by season group
Springs: look for a rich, warm dark brown or deep camel instead of black. Chocolate brown, cognac and warm espresso provide that same visual weight without the harsh cool contrast. For lighter options, olive green acts as a year-round neutral that black never quite manages for you. Summers: navy is your friend. Deep, cool, slightly dusty navy stays on the cool side of the spectrum like black, but it’s much softer. Charcoal grey (with a blue or purple tint, not a warm one) is another great choice. Avoid pure black, as it often makes Summer skin tones look a bit grey. Autumns: deep chocolate brown is your best bet for a dark neutral. It does all the work black is supposed to do, it grounds your outfit and feels authoritative, but it keeps the warmth you need. True Autumn and Dark Autumn types often find that a deep chocolate coat looks much more natural than black. Forest green and deep teal are also brilliant neutrals for you. Winters: as mentioned, black is your home turf. But if you want a change, deep charcoal and midnight navy both work well for True and Dark Winter.
What about black in patterns?
Wearing black as an accent in a print is quite different from wearing it as a solid block. A warm-season type wearing a floral print with a black background might find it easier to pull off than a plain black blouse, since the print breaks up that stark contrast and adds warmth. Still, patterns with a lot of black will always lean cool. If you always feel the need to add a scarf to brighten up a black-based print, listen to that gut feeling.
The psychological side
Many of us stick to black because it feels safe. It's the fashion equivalent of staying quiet, low risk, low reward. Funny enough, once you start wearing colours that actually suit you, getting dressed becomes much faster. You stop second-guessing and just grab the things that work. Black isn't going anywhere, but treating it as the default choice for everyone is a habit worth checking, especially when your perfect neutral might just be warm camel, dusty navy or rich chocolate brown.
