Does Your Colour Season Change When You Tan?
A tan changes how you look. It does not change the palette you were born with. Here is the difference, and what to do about it.
Every summer, the same question pops up. You've got a tan, your usual colours feel a bit off, and you start wondering if you've changed seasons. The short answer is no. A tan changes your depth and your contrast, but it doesn't touch your undertone, which is the foundation of your entire season.
The short answer
Your colour season doesn't change when you tan. Your season is built on fixed traits: the undertone of your skin, the depth and clarity of your eyes, and your natural hair pigment. A tan just sits on top. It makes your skin darker and can soften the contrast between your skin and hair, but it can't turn a cool undertone warm, or a warm one cool. If you're a True Summer in February, you're still a True Summer in August. You just need to tweak how you wear your palette while you're tanned.
What a tan actually changes
Two things shift, and both are about depth and contrast. First, there's depth. Since your skin is darker, very light, delicate colours might look a bit weak. Tones that look fresh in winter can start to look chalky against a deeper complexion. Then there's contrast. If you've got light hair, a tan brings your skin and hair closer together, making everything look lower contrast. If your hair is dark, a tan might just make the whole picture a bit softer. This is why your favourites might feel off in summer, even though your underlying colouring is exactly the same.
What a tan does not change
Undertone is the big one. Warm skin that tans is still warm skin. Cool skin that tans is still cool skin -- it usually turns a cooler, ashier brown rather than a golden one. Your need for clarity or softness doesn't change either. A Soft Summer still needs muted colours, and a Bright Winter still needs clear ones. Sun might lighten your hair slightly, but it doesn't rewrite your natural temperature. Because your base temperature and clarity are untouched, the colours that were fighting your skin in winter will still fight it now. How to dress your season while you are tanned
Stay in your palette, but reach for the deeper, richer end of it. Light Summer? Try moving from powder blue to a soft periwinkle or dusty navy. True Autumn? Try moving from camel to cognac or rust. If your tan has made you look a bit blended or flat, try a slightly deeper colour near your face, or pair a darker bottom with a mid-tone top to bring back some definition. Keep your temperature honest, too. Don't try to switch to the opposite side of the wheel. If you're cool, deeper cool tones will do the job. Your neckline is the best place to test this, as that's where a colour will either lift you or drain you.
Why so many people think they have become an Autumn
Tanning often makes people feel warmer and more golden, which is why everyone jumps to Autumn. It's an understandable mistake, but it usually confuses depth with temperature. Often, a cool season has just gained depth, so the darker colours in their palette look better. That's a shift in richness, not warmth. If you put a truly warm rust next to a tanned, cool-toned face, the mismatch is usually pretty obvious, especially in daylight. The clearest way to check is to hold colours up near your face: warm tones will tend to make a cool complexion look a bit muddy or sallow, while deeper cool tones will keep the skin looking clear and rested. The exception worth naming: styling, not season
There is one scenario where the picture does shift, but it's not the tan itself, it's everything else you change to match it. If your summer involves lighter, warmer hair and sun-lifted highlights, then your overall look shifts, even if your natural colouring hasn't. That's a choice you're making, not a change in your season. It's the same idea we talked about in our article on whether you can change your colour season. A tan alone isn't a reason to ditch your palette, but a full hair overhaul is a reason to style consistently in that new direction.
When the tan fades
As your skin returns to its natural depth, those lighter colours will start looking great again, and anything that felt too heavy in the heat of summer will settle back into place. This is why it's better to treat a tan as a seasonal adjustment rather than a complete identity change. You're just shifting the emphasis within your palette, using the deeper tones when you're tanned and the lighter ones when you're not. If your colouring has changed permanently, through going grey, a big hair colour change, or a change in sun exposure, that's a different story. But a summer tan? That's just temporary.
